What Is the Retina?

The retina is a thin layer of neural tissue lining the innermost surface of the eye, functioning much like the film in a camera. Light entering through the cornea and lens reaches the retina, where photoreceptor cells convert it into electrical signals that travel via the optic nerve to the brain. This process enables us to see.

The macula, located at the center of the retina, is responsible for over 90% of our visual acuity and is the most critical area. When the macula is damaged, vision can deteriorate rapidly, making early detection and treatment essential.
