Xtra (Corneal Cross-Linking)
Technology for Enhanced Corneal Protection
What is Xtra?
Xtra is a corneal collagen cross-linking procedure performed alongside LASIK or LASEK surgery. It enhances the structural strength of the cornea post-surgery, improving long-term safety and visual stability.
Using riboflavin (vitamin B2) and UV-A light, it strengthens the bonds between corneal collagen fibers. This application of CXL technology to vision correction surgery significantly increases the safety margin.
Xtra is not a separate surgery but a supplementary procedure that adds only about 90 seconds to LASIK/LASEK surgery with no impact on recovery time.
Collagen Cross-Linking Principle
Before Cross-Linking
Collagen fibers are loosely arranged and can deform under external forces.
After Cross-Linking
Collagen fibers are firmly bonded together, greatly enhancing corneal structural strength.
Benefits of Xtra
Enhanced Corneal Strength
Increases corneal structural strength by approximately 200-300% through collagen cross-linking, improving long-term post-surgical stability.
Myopia Regression Prevention
Effectively prevents myopia regression that may occur over time after surgery.
Ectasia Prevention
Significantly reduces the risk of corneal ectasia, a rare complication after laser surgery.
Minimal Additional Time
Performed immediately after LASIK/LASEK with approximately 90 seconds of riboflavin application + UV exposure, requiring no separate procedure.
Procedure Steps
STEP 1. LASIK or LASEK Surgery
Standard LASIK/LASEK surgery is performed first, completing vision correction with the excimer laser.
STEP 2. Riboflavin (Vitamin B2) Application
Riboflavin solution is applied to the corneal surface immediately after surgery. Riboflavin promotes collagen bonding when exposed to UV light.
STEP 3. UV-A Light Exposure
Specific wavelength UV-A light is applied for approximately 90 seconds. The UV light reacts with riboflavin to form cross-links between corneal collagen fibers.
STEP 4. Cross-Linking Complete
Collagen fibers become firmly bonded, enhancing corneal structural strength. Recovery proceeds identically to standard surgery with no additional recovery period.

About Safety
The CXL technology used in Xtra was originally developed for keratoconus treatment, with over 20 years of clinical data proving its safety and efficacy.
When applied supplementally to LASIK/LASEK surgery, it has been reported to increase the safety margin and significantly improve long-term visual stability. While there is an additional cost, it is a worthwhile investment considering long-term eye safety.
Safer Vision Correction with Xtra
Enhance corneal strength and visual stability by adding Xtra to your LASIK/LASEK surgery.
